Chapter 4
“…….Hmmmmmm, i see, i see. The method to do magic is this way. This feels just like downloading data.”
Since I’m the only one who can use it, is it okay to rename what I’ve downloaded?
Yea, let’s do that.
I wonder if I can call it [To Fall From the Sky]?
From what I can imagine, it certainly has that impression.
Information just flows into my head from somewhere.
Once it’s registered in my body, I can call it forth with just a thought later.
My head suddenly feels good but I can’t perfectly describe the feeling, seems like it’s going to be a habit.
Furthermore, after the magic is downloaded, it comes with supplementary explanations which are very user-friendly. It’s very good for me that it seems like I don’t need to memorize the magical chants.
“What what? This level of great magic naturally requires a large amount of Mana. Sacrifice? Vessel? What should I do?”
If you squint at the explanation, it seems like this magic requires creatures.
Then, a well-timed animal sound reached my ears.
Outside the window, I can see a tree frog, it’s singing right beside the window.
“Could it be fate…. but I feel sorry for it.”
I felt a pang of guilt but I still eventually caught the frog.
I’ve been catching frogs with my bare hands since I was in gradeschool.
Tree frogs are poisonous so I’ll wash my hands thoroughly.
Drawing a complex symbol in the room using chalk, placing the frog in a suitable vessel, the preparations are all set.
“……Alright. Let’s try testing it out then!”
Ready, the image inside my head becomes more vivid.
I feel as if Mana is flowing out from my body since a while ago.
The outgoing Mana transforms into Magic, filling and writing over specific stretches of space.
Mana is drained out of me, at the same time, I finally understand what it means to change reality.
“Then, I’m counting on this! [Resurrection of the Dead]!”
When I checked the developments, I had a satisfied smile.
And I have opened a door which led to the mysteries that mankind can only dream of.
The croaking frog became a person.
“……..what is this?”
When I came to, my surroundings have changed.
Fog hung over one side resulting to it have poor visibility.
Silently walking over inside the thick fog, there is an abundance of colorful flowers, I realize that it’s a garden.
A flower garden….. as well as the magic I used.
I really can’t help but have a bad feeling.
And then, further in the distance are creatures waiting with their eyes visible to me. The bad feeling spiked up when I noticed those.
A large river suddenly appeared in front of me without my notice. There is a small boat as well as a demon dressed in rags.
Oh wow, demons really exist, don’t they.
Two horns and red skin, no matter what angle I look at, it’s definitely a demon.
And for the piece de resistance, his googly eyes are facing me – I gasped for air.
“Is’t thee? He who hath opened the gates to the afterlife?”
“……it’s rather Japanese.”
“That’s what you want to ask……the landscape here will depend on your concepts of the afterlife, what you see doesn’t really mean anything.”
“Ah, makes sense.”
We~ll, this [Resurrection of the Dead] thing needs me to fetch a soul from the underworld, I just thought it’s gotta be like this.
It’s just that, if you go into a strange place like this, see a real demon…….. my first impression would be to think he’s Japanese.
There might be quite a variety, but the religion closest to me would likely paint this kind of picture.
“What doth thee wish for?”
Ignoring my bewilderment, I just witnessed a demon change the way he speaks just to fit in the situation, I finally remembered my original goal.
That’s right, I have a valid goal in coming to this place.
“A-, actually I just want to revive the old man who just crossed over”
I was anxious since I wouldn’t know what else to do if he’d dismiss me, but the demon is unexpectedly polite in his own way.
“…….Reviving the dead should be originally impossible. Do you have enough?”
“Specifically, how much?”
“In your standard magic measurement, 30 000”
“Then I’ll take it.”
I suddenly blurt that out.
What, it’s incredibly cheap, right? What’s wrong with it?
It seems that we took a strange turn when the demon suddenly looked frightened.
“Wha-what are you saying! Normally it would take 30,000 sacrifices to fulfill the requirements of this magic!”
“……no, we~ll, I’d still take it.”
“……why would you die for it?”
I can’t really explain it well myself, so I mutter, the demon was probably unsatisfied with my answers, but my full payment of magic is on the table, so he just gave up and sighed.
“Oh dear……. it can’t be helped. Wait for a bit.”
The demon got on the boat and rode into the mist to the other side of the river.
I think it’s around thirty minutes after?
I just waited beside the misty riverbank.
The demon returned with a strange ball of fire in his hands.
“Here, this is what you paid for, take it”
Anchoring the boat, the demon handed over the strange ball to me.
The weak fireball slowly drifted towards me.
I received it since it looks like it might disappear in any moment, I confirmed my trade with the demon.
“It’s this one? Then we’re good?”
“Ah, no doubt it is. I’ve confirmed that it’s the person from your memories. If not, then my bad.”
“Yes, thank you very much…….. is it really alright that this is too easy?”
“No no! There’s no way that’s right! People normally cannot do this, you know? Ah, additionally the gate to the underworld that you’ve opened may distort it’s senses. Beware”
“Eh!? In that case……… is it premature to use the old man?”
“Did you say something?”
My real intention might’ve been busted.
But that has nothing to do with it, I’m worried that the soul I finally obtained might get evil or defective.
Moreover, the magic that I spent may be a one-time use magic, so it’s more troubling.
Since it’s the case, I should just ask.
“……nono. By the way, since you can transfer magic, can I restore this guy’s power? He kinda tried to make me inherit his.”
If possible I would like a better assessment of the situation.
I only thought it on a whim but the demon unexpectedly indulged me.
“Hm? Indeed the soul is broken. Piecing back a broken soul should be done first. You’ll have to use more Mana, want me to repair it?”
“Then yes please.”
Since I answer impulsively, even the demon got speechless.
“Uh, hmm…. a non-standard human has appeared”
I handed the fireball to the exhasperated demon.
A gentle glow appeared, and the fireball became a lot more lively.
“There, it’s fine like this, right? Hurry up and go home, I’m quite busy”
A whooshing dog-like creature suddenly appeared.
I don’t want anything to do with it, so I turned my back.
My, it’s amazing but I really went through a lot of trouble, didn’t I.
Maybe I’m just the kind of person who’s easily amazed.
Don’t you think it’s usually not possible? That reviving the dead is actually doable.
well, we have a mess.
Since I’m the only one who can use it, is it okay to rename what I’ve downloaded?
